In Super Bowl LI, the Falcons faced the New England Patriots, and built up a 28–3 lead midway through the third quarter. After making the playoffs three years in a row between 2010 and 2012, the Atlanta Falcons are coming off their third straight season without a winning record following an 8-8 campaign in 2015. New Orleans finished ahead of Philadelphia based on better record vs. conference opponents. The Falcons preseason opponents and schedule were announced on April 7, 2016. However, Atlanta's record against the rest of the division—New Orleans and Tampa Bay—will have a bigger say in how the 2016 season plays out. Conservatively, a 3-3 division record should be the minimum for the Falcons if they want to make the postseason, especially considering how difficult the rest of their schedule is.
